Different Types of Lawn Grasses

what type of grass is in my yard

A beautiful, healthy lawn can make or break the curb appeal of your property.  Taking care of your grass can be a full-time job that requires the conscientious homeowner to educate themselves on their specific grass type, the best maintenance plan for the grass, and anything else that they can do, in order to ensure the prosperity of the specific grass.

Whether you are trying to enhance the grass that you already have, or if you are creating a lawn from scratch, you may want to learn about a variety of different grass types.  Below, you will find a list of some grass types, their general locales, and a little bit about each type listed.  If you are a property owner who is trying to decipher which type of grass you currently have on your lawn, feel free to reach out to one of our expert

Northern climates tend to have healthy grasses, such as: tall fescue, fine fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, or perennial ryegrass.  Of the grasses that are listed, bluegrass and ryegrass are more likely to hold up well under heavy foot traffic, therefore, if you play in your yard often or have a lot of people or pets walking around your property on a regular basis, then one of these may be the best choice for you.  Fescue grass tends to do quite nicely under shade trees, so if you have a lot of shade around your lawn, then this might be the perfect option.

Zoysia grass and Bermuda grass are very common grasses within the transitional climate zones.  Zoysia grass does especially well in areas that receive full sun.  It is often the choice for popular resorts and golf courses, too.

Southern climates may have thriving grasses, such as: St. Augustine grass or Centipede grass.  Both of these grasses can thrive in hot climates that deal with extreme heat and periods of drought, too.  Centipede grass is especially low-maintenance, and is favored among many deep-southern residents.

Part of taking care of your lawn and providing it with the best possible chance of acquiring strong roots and thriving in your local specific conditions entails you having to learn all that you can about your specific grass type.  It is an ongoing process that may change with the different seasons throughout the year, as well as with the different growing seasons.  A combination of having good soil, the right fertilizer, proper moisture, and the correct cutting instructions will lead to a healthy, beautiful lawn for you to enjoy.

At Menniti Landscaping, we pride ourselves on our effective lawn treatment services, and would love to work with you ensure your grass, no matter what type, flourishes throughout the year.
